While many other sculptors often perform their works on materials such as wood, stone…, artist Brad Spencer in the US chooses a different material for himself: brick.

Brad Spencer is one of the very few artists in the world who sculpts on brick. Spencer graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master’s degree in sculpture, and has worked as a sculptor since 1984.
While previously working in the field of painting, he approached sculpture as an optional course, through this course he officially found his true career.

Spencer’s main “tools” included clay, mortar, cement and copper. In 1989, he began experimenting with sculpture on brick material, which allowed him to apply and combine the experiences in painting that he had studied.
To carry out a certain project, Spencer will sculpt his work on unburned raw bricks, then divide the work into pieces and then bake the bricks.

When the bricks were fired, he assembled the pieces together using mortar to create a complete work. In particular, he loved to carry out his projects in front of people, even allowing viewers to lay 1 or 2 bricks themselves.
Spencer has done many sculptures in public locations such as Charlotte, Greenville, SC, and Asheville. Let’s admire some of his works through a series of photos:
